Nov. 22 Warsaw Trny.

The Wildkat wrestlers went 3-2 and showed a lot of potential this past Saturday at the Warsaw Super Six.  I was overall pleased with our performance on the mat.  Dylan Green (5-0) and Joey Surack (4-1) both showed that they would be very hard to beat this year. When you are starting five freshmen in the lineup you have to know that many other teams will be more experienced.  Our guys went out and wrestled their hearts out and came away winning some matches and I was very proud of that.  We have some things to improve on and that will be the focus of this week’s practices.  Our next match will be against Eastern on Dec. 3.  – Coach Wells

Dec. 3 Eastern (T)

The Wildkat wrestlers earned a hard fought victory over Eastern last night 36-33.  The guys really fought hard and had that never die attitude in every single match. We won a lot of the close matches we needed to get the job done. I could not be more proud of them.  Dylan Green won against a very tough kid in triple overtime to clinch the win for us.  Eastern was 5-0 coming into this match so we knew they were going to be hard to beat.  Now we go back to work today to get ready for the Western Super 6 on Saturday. - Coach Wells

Dec. 6 Super Six Trny @ Western

The Wildkat Wrestlers ended up 3-2 at the Western Super 6 on Saturday.  Dylan Green was the lone champion at 189.  We came out a little flat in the morning and weren’t wrestling quite to our potential.  With 6 freshmen in the lineup you are just going to have days like that. The potential on this team is great and if we keep up the hard work we believe we will be able to do some great things come sectional time. We finished the day strong defeating Taylor, South Bend St. Joe and Clinton Central.  Now it is time to get back to work and fix the mistakes we made Saturday.  The Kats have a home meet against a tough Northwestern team on Wednesday. – Coach Wells

Dec. 11 Northwestern (H) (L) 42-30
The Kokomo wrestlers had their home opener last night against a tough Northwestern team and lost 42-30. We lost a couple matches that were really close. If we get those back, we win the match. It seems like we keep getting a little better every time we step out there and I’m proud of them for that. The guys are working really hard everyday at practice and have the desire to win matches and get better. You just can’t ask for more than that. Our next meet is at the Frankfort Super 6 on Saturday. - Coach Wells
Dec. 13 Frankfort Trny.

The Wildkat wrestlers had a tough day on Saturday at the Frankfort Super Six but still managed to bring home three individual champions.  Joey Surack (119), LT Nix (145) and Dylan Green (189) all won there respective weight classes.  These guys all wrestled very well and are really going to make some noise in January.  Joey dropped from 125 to 119 this past week and is really dominating that weight class.  If he keeps wrestling like this, he has a great chance of wrestling in the state finals in February.  LT Nix wrestled the best we have ever seen him.  He is wrestling very aggressively and starting to put everything together.  We think he is really going to surprise some people this year.  Dylan continued his win streak with a 5-0 record on Saturday making him 16-0 on the season.  Dylan has really been a force for us this year.  He is one of those kids you can almost always count on a win from.

Being a young team is always tough, but things are bright for our future.  We are going out there and hanging with tough kids and tough teams, we are just struggling with turning that corner to the next level of competitiveness.  This comes with mat time and experience, which many of our guys just don’t have yet.  We think the future of the program is very promising and have some great kids coming up. - Coach Wells

Dec. 16 Logansport (H) The KHS wrestling team’s match with Logansport was not played last evening due to the inclement weather.
Dec. 18 Westfield (T)

The wrestling match scheduled for last evening with Westfield was postponed due to the inclement weather.

Dec. 27 KHS Invitational
(Southwood, Kokomo, Adams Central, Prairie Heights, Wawasee, Anderson)
Kokomo was 0-5 even though Joey Surack and Dylan Green went 5-0. Tony Benedict went 4-1, Drake Brubaker went 3-1 and L.T. Nix was 3-2 in competition. Kokomo had four forfeits due to injury, illness and vacations.
Jan. 10 Peru Invitational Kokomo was 0-4; however, Joey Surack was 4-0 in the 119 weight class. Dylan Green was 3-1, Zacc Truman (112) was 2-2 and L.T. Nix (145) was 2-2.
The Wildkat wrestlers had a tough day team-wise due to giving up six forfeits at the Peru Super Duals. Our concern for the day was to focus on individual success and to keep getting better. Joey Surack had another great day at 119 going 4-0 with four pins in the first period. He is really dominating the weight class and continues to improve every day. Dylan Green went 3-1 on the day, losing his first match of the season in a close one to Darryn Scott from Marion.

Right now we need to focus on getting our guys healthy for sectionals in three weeks. We need to continue to improve, fill up the lineup, and keep wrestling hard. Our next meet is senior night vs. Logansport on Tuesday. - Coach Wells
Jan. 13 Logansport (H)

The Kokomo wrestlers had a tough time with Logansport last night.  We won four matches including Tony Benedict at 103, Zacc Truman 112, LT Nix 145 and Dylan Green 215.  Tony Benedict wrestled very well at 103.  It was the best we have seen him all year and he really had a spark with him out there.  LT has really stepped it up here in the past month and has improved as much as anyone on the team.  Dylan Green bumped up to 215 tonight and wrestled very well there against a quality kid from Logan.

The focus on the team is to keep improving and to get ready for Conference on the 24th and sectionals the following week.  Our next meet is tonight at Tri-Central. - Coach Wells

Jan. 14 Tri-Central (T) Weather cancellation
Jan. 17 Elwood Invitational The KHS wrestlers went 2-3 in the invitational.
Benedict (103) 5-0, Surack (119) 5-0, Green (215) 5-0. Truman (112) 4-1, Nix (145) 4-1, Butler (152) 3-2.
Jan. 21 Tri-Central (T)

The Kokomo wrestlers lost a close one to Tri Central last night 41-30.  Joey Surack (119), Bo Butler (152), Jesus Rebollar (160), Cameron Colby (171), and Dylan Green (215) were all victorious for the Kats.  It was really good to see Bo, Cameron, and Jesus get wins.  Those are three freshmen that got three pins in a row for us.  That is exciting.

Some of our guys came out a little flat and lost some really close matches.  That just comes with experience and down the road we are confident that we will win the close ones.  We just have to come out with more confidence and aggression sometimes.

Today at practice we will work on the things we need to correct to get ready for NCC at New Castle on Saturday and sectionals at Oak Hill on the 31st. – Coach Wells

Jan. 24 North Central Conference

The Wildkat wrestlers had one individual champion at Saturday’s NCC meet.  Dylan Green had a great day at 215 and beat some good kids to come out champ.

Joey Surack took a third place, losing to a tough New Castle kid in the second round by two points.  Joey did however become Kokomo High School’s all-time win leader Saturday winning his 155th match.  This is an unbelievable accomplishment.  Winning 100 matches in a career is a feat in itself, but winning over 150 is almost unheard of.

Dalton Hatt ended the day with a 3rd place finish at 140, LT Nix earned a 5th place spot at 145, and Bo Butler, freshman, got a 4th place finish at 152.

We have lots of freshmen in the lineup and have lost some guys for various reasons.  Right now we just need to focus on individual success and keep getting better for the future of this team.  We have to stay positive and know that success is on its way.  It will just take hard work and time, which is something that we have on our side.

Our next match will be sectionals at Oak Hill on Saturday. – Coach Wells

Jan. 31 IHSAA Sectional @ Oak Hill Kokomo placed eighth with 125 points behind Marion's first place win with 206.5 points; however, Kokomo has five wrestlers who will advance to the Peru regional on Saturday.
Tony Benedict (103), Zacc Truman (112), Joey Surack (119), L.T. Nix (145) and Dylan Green (215). Surack, Green and Benedict won their weight classes.
Feb. 7 IHSAA Regional @ Peru Kokomo had two regional champions: Joey Surack (119) and Dylan Green (215). Tony Benedict advanced to semistate competition in the 103 weight class with his second place finish.
Feb. 14 IHSAA Semistate @ Fort Wayne Dylan Green placed third in the 215 weight class and will compete next weekend at the state meet in Indianapolis.
Feb. 21 IHSAA State Finals @ Conseco Fieldhouse Dylan advanced to quarterfinal's competition on Saturday by besting Castle's Clay Robison 5-2 and improving his record to 44-2 for the season.
Dylan finished in eighth place. He lost in his quarterfinal match (3-0) to Mishawaka's Christian Lentz, who was the eventual runner-up in the 215 weight class.
Dylan Green earned an 8th place finish at the state wrestling finals this weekend. He went out there and really wrestled well Friday night beating Clay Robison from Castle in the first round. We knew this was going to be a tough match. Robison was a semi-state runner up with only one loss on the season. Dylan wrestled very tough against this guy and beat him 3-1. He lost against the eventual state runner-up, Christian Lentz from Mishawaka, in the 2nd round getting beat 3-0. Dylan wrestled a very close match against him and this just shows how close he is from being a state champion-caliber wrestler.

We are very proud of Dylan and his accomplishments this year. He has improved tremendously and continued to wrestle better every week. His hard work in and out of the practice room has been contagious to the rest of the team and has been a great leader all year. We now look forward to next year and start to work on some things to become a state champion in 2010. – Coach Wells
