| May 2 | Kokomo Relays (Warsaw, Richmond, Western, Marion, Maconaquah, Peru, Kokomo, Northwestern) |
The Kokomo Lady Wildkats chased Warsaw all day at the Kokomo Relays, but
turned in a strong performance by edging defending Sectional champion Western
for second place. Senior Ashley DeWitt again recorded a solid performance by
winning the shot put with a Kokomo Relays record and the discus as she was
awarded the 2009 Walter Cross Award for the Outstanding Female Athlete.
Ashley is the first Lady Wildkat to claim this prestigious award since current long
jump coach Lashonda Davis won the award by setting meet records in the 100 and
long jump. Kokomo went 1-2 in the shot put as Kelly Hopkins recorded a seasonbest
36-2 for runner-up honors.
First-year senior sprinters Mary Lang and Ashlee Sandoval were outstanding as they claimed third and fifth, respectively, in the 100 dash. Mary and Ashlee joined Emily Keller and Maddie Cassidy in the 400 relay and earned the runner-up medals. Maddie, Emily, and Ashlee teamed with Whitney Weir to win the silver medals in the sprint medley relay. Maddie and Whitney joined forces with Annika Taber and Kellie Miles to earn Kokomo’s only relay victory in the Middle Distance Medley as Annika recorded a sub-2:30 800. Annika also claimed third in the 1,000 and sixth in the pole vault, while Kellie finished sixth in the 3200. Rachel Pace cleared 8-0 for fifth in the pole vault and Sarah Frey was sixth in the high jump. Brielle Bonnafon earned two individual ribbons with a fourth in the long jump and seventh in the 100 high hurdles. Freshman Courtney Gilman turned in solid performances in her three races, but sophomore Lexi Laird may have preserved Kokomo’s 1.5 point victory margin over Western when she fell but rolled out to finish her last two hurdles so her shuttle hurdle team (Whitney Weir, Courtney Gilman, Brielle Bonnafon) could finish fourth. - Coach Barnes |
