The Lady Kats had a tough opener with Lafayette Harrison last evening. Harrison, as expected, brought a solid line up to Kokomo. Alex Beechy lost a hard fought match to the returning state qualifier Kemi Adeyemi. Both of our doubles teams lost close matches and showed some good promise for the season. At Number 1 doubles Emily Bays and Kasie Hellman lost 7-5 6-3. At number two doubles Abby Hemmeger and Ashley Lobeck lost 6-4 6-2. Mariah Malott and Emily Oldaker showed some great improvement at 2 and 3 singles. The Lady Kats are in action tonight at home against Twin Lakes. – Coach Leavitt
Apr. 16 Twin Lakes (H) (W) 3-2
The Lady Kat tennis team posted a good win last night versus Twin Lakes. Notching her first win at #1 singles was Alex Beechy in impressive fashion with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. At #2 singles Emily Oldaker got her first varsity win with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Both doubles teams lost close matches. The fun of the night came at #3 singles where Mariah Malott, also new to the varsity squad this year, dropped her first set 1-6. Many girls would not be able to come back mentally from an opening set like that; however, Mariah notched consecutive 6-4 victories to lock the win for the Lady Kats. Congratulations to the girls on their first win of the season. - Coach Leavitt
Apr. 21 Western (H) Rained out
Apr. 22 Frankfort (H) (L) 4-1
The girl’s tennis team had a close match last night against the Hot Dogs of Frankfort. Though we came in on the short side of a 1-4 loss, we saw some close matches and good play out of our young squad. Winning the lone point of the night in a long two and a half hour match was the #2 doubles team of Ashley Lobeck and Abby Hemmeger. It was great to see these two get a win underneath their belt. At #1 singles, Alex Beechy lost a close 5-7, 3-6 match. The girls continue to improve and will play this Saturday at the Crawfordsville Invitational. - Coach Leavitt
Apr. 25 Crawfordsville Invitational Kokomo placed sixth. Number two doubles (Hemmeger and Lobeck) finished in third place and number one singles (Beechy) finished fourth.
Apr. 29 Tipton (T) (W) 5-0
The Lady Kat tennis team had an outstanding night at Tipton last evening. We were able to secure a solid 5-0 victory to even our record at 2-2. With a bit of a different line up we are starting to look like a sectional contender! At #1 Singles, Alex Beechy came out a little bit sluggish but was able to post a 6-3, 6-1 win. At #2 Singles, Emily Oldaker used her solid play to win 6-3, 6-2. At #3 Singles, freshman Kasie Hellman played an impressive first match in varsity singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Moving up to #1 Doubles is Abby Hemmeger and Ashley Lobeck lost a tough first then regrouped well for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win. Finally, the big "experiment" of the evening was playing freshman Madison Waltemath and Mariah Malott at #2 doubles. They played great as a team and won 6-3, 6-3. Our young squad is getting better every day and we definitely have our eyes on the sectional title in a few weeks. We are not ready to let the nine-year run come to an end just yet!

In JV Action, the girls posted a 4-3 win to also move to 2-2 on the year. Winning in singles action was Bre Allen. Winning in doubles action were Hannah and Ariel Werner, Jacy Rush and Jamie Schnabel, and Haley Garrett and Jenny Brown.

The Lady Kat tennis players had their opening NCC weekend this past Saturday. The girls started out with a tough 2-3 loss to defending conference champion Richmond. Winning in convincing fashion at #1 singles was Alex Beechy and at #2 singles Emily Oldaker. Great wins for those two as we wind up for the IHSAA tournament season just around the corner and the remainder of the NCC matches. At #3 singles, Kasie Hellman lost a close match, losing a tie-breaker in the second set to Richmond. Great experience for the freshman! - Coach Leavitt
May 6 Peru (T) Weather cancellation
May 7 Huntington North (H) (L) 4-1
The Lady Kat tennis team took to the court against Huntington North last night. We knew it was going to be a good match that could go either way. Unfortunately for the Kats we came up on the wrong end. Winning our only point was the #1 doubles team of Ashley Lobeck and Abby Hemmeger. They won an exciting three set match and show that they are willing to fight for every point. At #1 singles, Alex Beechy lost a close 4-6, 4-6 match to fellow senior Whitney Neuenschwander. At #2 singles, Emily Oldaker lost a marathon of a tie break (12-14) in the first set and was not able to stretch it to three. Mariah Malott continues to improve at #3 singles. At #2 doubles, I was very proud of two freshmen in the lineup losing a close second set 4-6. Though we lost 1-4 it was a close match and I believe we will reap the benefits of a strong schedule in a couple weeks when we play host to the IHSAA sectional tournament.

The team is in action tonight against Peru at 4:30.- Coach Leavitt
May 9 New Castle / Anderson @ Marion New Castle 4 - Kokomo 1
Anderson 5 - Kokomo 0

Both teams are vastly improved from last season. Winning the lone match for the Kats on Saturday was Mariah Malott with a 7-6 (13-11), 6-4 win versus New Castle. Alex Beechy lost two very close matches at #1 singles.

The Lady Kats are in action on Wednesday versus Logansport and hope to notch our first NCC win of the season. - Coach Leavitt

May 14 Marion (H) (L) 5-0
The girls tennis team played the conference champion Marion Giants last night. As expected, the Giants were solid from top to bottom and came away with a 5-0 win. Alex Beechy played a great match against Kristin Futrell, who many consider to be a top 15 player in the state, losing 6-4, 6-4. The doubles team of Emily Oldaker and Madison Waltemath lost 6-3, 6-3. Despite the loss, the girls played some hard fought tennis.

An exciting note on the evening is that the junior varsity won 6-2. By far, it’s the best they have played this year! Winning in singles action were Bre Allen and Ali Wray, Winning in doubles were Hanna and Ariel Werner, Jacy Rush and Jamie Schnabel, Emily Fisher and Alyssa Smalling, and Brice Allen and Carsen Alley. Congrats to the junior varsity!

We are in action tomorrow at Culver Military and are anxious to get the sectional draw Monday to see if we can defend for the 10th year in a row. - Coach Leavitt
