The Lady Kats softball team had a great opener last night against Peru, defeating the Tigers 9-2.

Carly Painter pitched the win with Natalie Granson behind the plate. Painter threw for six innings with 14 strikeouts, giving up three hits, no walks, and one earned run. Christine Skaggs pitched the last inning to finish the job, with Brittney Scamehorn behind the plate. Skaggs gave up no hits and struck out two.

Painter supported her cause with a great performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two singles and two doubles, bouncing one off of the fence. Skaggs put the first pitch of her varsity career over the fence for two runs and went 2-for-3 for the night. Elizabeth Wagner went 2-for-4 on the night with a single and a triple.

The Lady Kats play again tonight against Northwestern at home with a 5PM start time.- Coach Tate

Once again, great pitching and contagious hitting led the Lady Kats softball team to victory as they defeated Tipton 4-0 on the road last night for their third win of the season.

We started the game a little slow, but in the third inning we were able to put together a string of six hits on no errors to score all four runs.

Kokomo totaled nine hits in seven innings. We were led by Elizabeth Wagner with three base hits and Christine Skaggs with a double and a single. Jordan Broomfield, Carly Painter, Tiffany Pratt, and Katie Owings each contributed hits of their own.

Kokomo didn’t commit any errors in the field due to Painter’s shutout pitching performance with 16 strikeouts. She walked one and allowed just one hit. This win improves our record to 3-0. The JV and Varsity teams both play next week on Monday at Lewis Cass. - Coach Tate

The Lady Kats softball improved their record to 6-1 last night on the road against Carroll. Carly Painter threw a no-hitter with no walks and 16 strike outs for a final score of 7-2. Elizabeth Wagner hit three doubles with two RBI’s before getting walked her final at-bat. Jordan Broomfield, Carly Painter and Caroline Harbaugh each added two hits for the game. Tiffany Pratt, Katie Owings and Christian Lawhead each had singles. Pratt, Owings and Broomfield all added an RBI as well. The only two runs for Carroll were scored in the 1st inning on Kokomo errors. The Lady Kats host Lafayette Jeff today JV and varsity start times are both 6:00 p.m.- Coach Tate

The Lady Kats softball team is now undefeated in the conference after they defeated New Castle in a home doubleheader Saturday. Kokomo picked up the conference win 2-1 for the first game and won the second game 15-10. This brings their record up to 8 wins, 1 loss. A great pitching performance by Elizabeth Wagner insured the conference win. Wagner allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning 14 batters. It was a very intense and competitive game. Entering the top of 7th inning both teams were scoreless. New Castle scored on a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch and then a passed ball before Wagner struck out the next three batters to end the inning. With our last chance to manufacture a run, the Lady Kats did not disappoint. Brittany Scamehorn started the inning off blasting a double to leftfield, and Wagner followed with a single and quickly took second. Carly Painter came through with one out and launched the game-winning double on what was supposed to be a pitch out for an intentional walk!

In game two, Painter pitched four innings and Christine Skaggs pitched three to combine for the 15-10 win. Kokomo scored nine runs early, holding New Castle scoreless until the 4th inning. We got on them early, and then got a little careless defensively, allowing five unearned runs. The Lady Kats held up offensively to hold onto another win. Hitting totals for the day were: Wagner 4 hits- 3 singles and a double, Painter 3 hits- 2 doubles and a single, Scamehorn 3 hits- 2 singles and a double, Christian Lawhead 3 hits- 2 singles and a double, Caroline Harbaugh 3 singles, Skaggs 3 singles, Tiffany Pratt, Jordan Broomfield and Katie Owings each contributed base hits. New Castle is a solid team with a good pitcher- two great wins for the Lady Kats! - Coach Tate

Kokomo fell to host Logansport 4-1 for their 1st conference loss. This brings our record to 8-3. Elizabeth Wagner took the loss in six innings of pitching. The Lady Kats only had three hits for the game. Wagner had two singles and Brittney Scamehorn had a double. Wagner gave up two doubles, a single, and Logan blooped in three more to the gaps. Wagner struck out seven and walked one. Scamehorn took advantage of the Berries infield play, scoring the only run for Kokomo. - Coach Tate

May 7 Noblesville (H) (L) 7-1
The softball team lost to Noblesville at home yesterday 7-1. Elizabeth Wagner went five innings on the mound and Carly Painter finished the last two innings. The duo didn’t issue any walks and fanned eight batters. Kokomo’s defense gave up four unearned runs on eight recorded hits. Painter connected big following a single by Wagner to drive in the Lady Kats only run in the 6th inning. Jordan Broomfield also recorded a hit in the 1st inning. Kokomo struggled at the plate against Noblesville’s pitching- making contact eight times for three hits with 16 strikeouts.

Kokomo hosts Muncie Central Saturday for a conference game in a double header at 11AM. The Lady Kats are currently 2-1 in conference play and 8-4 for the season. – Coach Tate

The Lady Kats softball team bettered their record to 10-4 this weekend with a doubleheader sweep against Muncie Central. Kokomo hosted the games with game one counting toward their 3-1 conference record. The Lady Kats found their bats again this weekend with 16 hits in game 1 and 11 hits in game 2, including two home runs. They also turned out great pitching performances once again; Carly Painter gets the 10-0 conference win in a six-inning shutout. Painter dominated on the mound, allowing just two hits and one walk while fanning 16 Bearcats. Freshman Christine Skaggs went the distance on the mound in game 2 to claim the 11-6 victory. Skaggs allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out 11 batters. The wind didn’t stop Kokomo’s hits Saturday as Carly Painter and Katie Owings both knocked one out in game 2. Stellar hitting performances for the day included: Caroline Harbaugh- a triple and three singles, Painter- home run, a double, and two singles, Elizabeth Wagner- double and two singles, Brittney Scamehorn – double and single, Owingshome run and a single, Katelyn Crull- three hits, Christian Lawhead- three hits, Jordan Broomfield- two hits, Skaggs- two hits, and Tiffany Pratt- one hit. – Coach Tate

Kokomo improved their record last night to 11-4 with a 4-3 win at home against Marion. The 9-inning nail biter improves their conference record to 4-1 so far.

Elizabeth Wagner started the game on the mound - going 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Carly Painter. Painter finished for the save in 4 2/3 innings. Kokomo scored two runs in the 1st inning off a double by Wagner, then capitalizing on a walk, and wild pitches. The Giants settled down and held Kokomo until the 7th inning. Kokomo had its walks, wild pitches and passed balls in the 3rd and 4th innings to let the Giants score three runs on one hit.

With Kokomo down one run, the last five innings were tight. Wagner singled in the 7th with one out to be bunted around by Jordan Broomfield and hit in by Painter to tie and send the game into extra innings. The Lady Kats defense and pitching held up until we closed the deal in the 9th inning with a double to the left field fence by Wagner and a line drive by Broomfield to score Wagner.

The Lady Kats will travel to Marion for a re-match today.-

The Lady Kats came up short against the defending state champs, McCutcheon, last night in a 6-4 game at home.

Kokomo gave up three runs in the first inning on two big hits along the foul lines and an error. Elizabeth Wagner blasted a line drive to start the game offensively for Kokomo, and Jordan Broomfield followed with a double past the leftfielder to score Wagner.

Painter settled down on the mound and held the Mavericks to just two earned runs for the game. The Lady Kats matched them offensively (seven hits to nine) and defensively (three errors to two). Painter fanned nine batters, and McCutcheon retired five Kokomo hitters via strikeout.

Both teams rallied late in the game as Painter gave up a two-run homer in the sixth, and Christine Skaggs hit one out to lead off the 7th inning.

Kokomo (4-1 in conference play) will travel to Anderson Saturday for JV and varsity doubleheaders. - Coach Tate

The softball team took their second loss to Huntington North last night at home 4-2. Carly Painter took the loss despite a great pitching performance. She threw a two-hitter with no walks and had 13 strikeouts. Just one of the Vikes runs was earned as the Lady Kats committed seven errors. Huntington was good at just putting the ball in play and making the Kats infield scramble.

Offensively Kokomo had difficulty creating runs with just three hits for the day. Caroline Harbaugh led with a double and RBI to score Painter, who got on with a fielders choice. Elizabeth Wagner had a base hit, stole 2nd and then 3rd on two pitches in a row and finally scored on a sacrifice fly by Painter. Katie Owings was working on a rally with a base hit in the 5th after Wagner’s hit-steal-score series, only to have her line drive hit Harbaugh running the bases for the 3rd out.

Kokomo will play again Saturday at Maconaquah for a doubleheader before facing Logan in sectional play on Monday. – Coach Tate
