Enrollments still being accepted at Kokomo-Schools Print E-mail

Even though the early enrollment deadline has passed, Kokomo-Schools officials want patrons to know that enrollments are still being accepted for the 2013-2014 school year.

Most importantly, NO application is necessary if your student plans to continue in his/her current educational program.
If you wish to change your student's educational program or enroll in a new educational program, Applications are available at any Kokomo-Center elementary school or middle school, as well as at the Administrative Service Center at 1500 S. Washington Street. Parents also may apply on line at KokomoSchools.com.

Options for K-8 students

Parents may choose from the neighborhood schools or the magnet schools offered at Kokomo-Center Schools. Neighborhood schools have distinct boundaries and all students living within those boundaries are guaranteed admission, which is determined by the student's residence. Magnet schools are not assigned based on neighborhood residential boundaries. Upon acceptance, any qualified student from the Kokomo area can attend a magnet school.

Neighborhood Schools

1-to-1 Technology Schools are at Pettit Park Elementary, Bon Air Elementary, and Bon Air Middle School. 1-to-1 Technology Schools provide each student with a personal computing device (e.g. tablet or laptop) for use during the school day. These technological tools engage students while enhancing the curriculum; thereby, maximising student learning. Elementary and middle school students living within the Pettit Park and Bon Air districts are automatically enrolled unless they apply to attend a different school.

Traditional Schools are at Boulevard Elementary, Elwood Haynes Elementary, and Maple Crest Middle School. The Traditional Schools provide high quality instruction in core subject areas including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. All students experience classes such as art, music, technology, and physical education weekly. Elementary students living within the Boulevard and Elwood Haynes districts are automatically enrolled. Any middle school student is eligible for Maple Crest. Students must apply to attend the Career School for 8th graders. Career School students have the opportunity to investigate a career area for high school credit. Students in the Career School attend classes both at Maple Crest and the Kokomo Area Career Center.

Magnet Schools

The Wallace School of Integrated Arts will house students in grades K-6 for the 2013-2014 school year. Even though this magnet school is open to all students, some classes have waiting lists. If more students apply, especially at the Kindergarten level, than openings are available, a lottery will be conducted. The Integrated Arts Schol opened in the fall of 2012. Students study core curriculum in an environment that is integrated into the arts. Students concentrate on the core curriculum with instructional methods tied closely to visual arts, dance, movement, and drama. Students also learn piano keyboarding and violin.

The International Schools are magnets at Lafayette Park Elementary, Sycamore Elementary, and Central Middle School. These International Schools are open to all students. These schools prepare students for the changing world in which they live. Students at the International Schools experience real-world projects with a global focus. These diverse learning opportunities use mathematics, science, writing, history, art, and music. International students also have daily instruction in a foreign language.

KEY (Kokomo Enrichment of Youth) magnet schools at Sycamore Elementary and Central Middle School provide comprehensive instruction for eligible gifted and talented K-8 students. Teachers create an environment that recognizes the abilities of students by providing a learning experience that is above grade level in mathematics, language arts, science, and history. The KEY cohorts use the International Schools curriculum and also have daily instruction in a foreign language.

2013-2014 Preschool Application Print E-mail
Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hauswald thanked the Kokomo-Center Schools Board of School Trustees for continuing to be a leader in the state in providing quality early childhood options for members of our community. At the Feb. 4th meeting, the Board approved the expansion of a free community preschool at Elwood Haynes Elementary and opened a free community preschool at Pettit Park Elementary and also voted to open an IB (International Baccalaureate) with KEY (Kokomo Enrichment of Youth) readiness at Lafayette Park International Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year.

“I congratulate our Board members and community leaders for recognizing the importance that early childhood education plays in students’ lives in Kokomo,” Superintendent Hauswald said. “Kokomo-Center already hosts one of the only Level 4 Paths to Quality (highest accreditation level) in the state of Indiana at the Darrough Chapel Early Learning Center with the Head Start program.”

Dr. Hauswald noted that Monday’s Board action continues Kokomo-Center’s progressive steps towards providing quality preschool options for all students by utilizing local grant dollars from the Howard County Community Foundation, as well as state and federal grant dollars.

“Changing the Elwood Haynes community preschool half-day program to be 100% tuition free for participants and adding a second site at Pettit Park that is also 100% tuition free for a half-day program will increase greatly the number of students receiving an early childhood education in our community,” Dr. Hauswald explained. “This would not have been possible without community support.”

Applications available at the schools

Applications for the free half-day preschool programs at Elwood Haynes (910 S. Cooper) and Pettit Park (901 W. Havens) elementary schools can be obtained at either of these schools, at the Darrough Chapel Early Learning Center (900 S. Goyer Road), or at the Administrative Service Center (1500 S. Washington). Half-day sessions are from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and/or 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Parents must provide transportation and pay a $10 weekly supply fee for these programs.

Parents of preschoolers attending Elwood Haynes will have the option of paying for additional half-day services to receive full day preschool (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) at the rate of $60 per week as space permits. An extended day (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) may be available for an additional $15 per week.

Elwood Haynes Elementary Principal Linda Campbell said she is excited about expanding an already outstanding preschool program.

“We offer a quality half-day program, and now it will be free for our community,” Principal Campbell said. “We are proud of our developmental centers that provide preschool students with opportunities to learn academic, physical, and social skills which expand fundamental learning skills and prepare these students for Kindergarten. Kokomo-Center preschools provide high-quality instruction that meets the learning needs of each student.”

Director of Special Programs, Dr. Dawn McGrath, believes an early investment in our children is critical to the future of our community.

“We hope all area students will participate in one of these quality preschool programs at least one year prior to kindergarten,” Dr. McGrath said. “All of these programs will be staffed with teachers with early childhood teaching licenses. We want all members of the community to value the importance of preschool education.”
